Both Softball and Baseball are their own unique sport even though they share many similarities.

Softball was originally invented in 1887 by George Hancock as a form of indoor baseball. Over time it has evolved into a sport of its own. There are two variations of softball: fastpitch and slowpitch.

Fastpitch softball is more popular in competitive leagues, especially at the college and international tournament levels. Slowpitch softball is more popular in recreational leagues. The different rules of slowpitch are meant to maintain a competitive balance for less skilled players by taking away strategies that require higher skill levels.

The differences between baseball and softball can be characterized by the differences in:

    • Pitching Area
    • Distance from pitcher’s area to home plate
    • Base paths
    • Field Size
    • Bats
    • Size of Ball

The most noticeable difference between the two sports is the ball. It is important to note the differences when you buy softballs and baseballs to ensure that you get the correct one for the sport you are playing.

MVP is Canada’s premiere softball and baseball equipment supplier since 1973. We carry a wide range of softball and baseball balls, including practice baseballs, practice softballs, pitching machine balls and many more baseball balls for sale!

Difference Between Softball and Baseball Balls

Softball and Baseballs are almost identical but there are a few major differences between the two. The most noticeable difference between softball and baseball balls is the size and color.

    Size

Baseballs are smaller and denser than softballs. Baseballs must weigh between 5 and 5 ¼ oz and have a circumference of 9 inches.

Softballs are either 11” or 12” inches  in circumference and weigh between 6 ½ to 7 oz. Softballs also have a softer core than baseballs.

    Colour

Baseballs are almost always white, where as softballs are often yellow.

Depending on which league you are playing, each level of play will certify balls for use. For example, Major League Baseball’s rules state that the ball must be spherical and made with yarn wound around a core made of cork or rubber of a similar material. Two strips of horsehide or cowhide must cover the ball and are stitched together as well.
